Wrexham Launches Search for Champion Sausage

Wrexham is to have its very own sausage following the launch of a competition to come up with a Champion banger for the area.

The competition is the result of an initiative of the Wrexham Tourism Forum to develop a greater sense of place for the area. The Forum has worked alongside the Town Centre Forum and the Economic Development Department of Wrexham County Borough Council to run a competition for local suppliers to win the title of “Wrexham Champion Sausage”.

Darryl Shaw, Chair of the Wrexham Tourism Forum, explains: “It is important for all destinations to create a sense of place so visitors feel they are visiting somewhere with unique qualities. In hotels in Wrexham this can be done by having pictures of local places of interest, use of the Welsh language or by featuring local produce on the menu. Our members were keen to see a local food product developed and that is where the idea of the Wrexham sausage originated.”

Wrexham has a proud tradition as a market town and has its very own listed Butchers Market located in the historic town centre. The market is still home to a number of quality independent butchers and they were keen to get involved when they first heard about the idea. However, the competition is not limited to the town centre as butchers from across the County Borough are eligible to take part and have been sent details of the competition.

Judging and announcement of the winners will take place during Wrexham’s St David’s Day Celebrations on Saturday 1st March. The celebrations will take place on Queens Square and feature a Welsh market, performances and activities to appeal to all ages. A few market stalls may still be available for producers of Welsh food or crafts. In addition to all that TV Chef Matt Tebbutt will be giving cookery demonstrations as well as being one of the judges of the sausage competition.

Colin Hyde, Marketing & Communications Manager with the Economic Development of the Council says: “We were happy to support the Tourism Forum in developing this innovative concept. Our St David’s Day event is designed to appeal to visitors and residents alike and the final of the sausage competition should add some sizzle to our celebration of all things Welsh.”
