Shopmobility Celebrates 10th Birthday

The successful Wrexham town centre Shopmobility scheme celebrated its 10th Birthday this week with a Christmas get-together for members at Trinity Church, which was also attended by Deputy Mayor Councillor George James.

The service, run by Wrexham County Borough Council, provides scooters for those with restricted mobility and operates from Wrexham Bus Station. Run on a membership basis it is supported by the National Federation of Shopmobility (NFSUK), an independent registered charity. The Wrexham scheme has approximately 1500 current members and continues to grow with membership up 25% this year.

Carol Dean, Wrexham Shopmobility Co-ordinator, said: “When we started in 1995 we had just 6 scooters. 10 years on we have a fleet of 26 and a membership base that is still growing. The majority of people using the service come from within the County Borough but we do get a significant number from across North Wales and the English border counties. We have even had visitors from as far afield as Canada and South Africa!”

The service is designed to give those with restricted mobility the independence to continue shopping in Wrexham town centre, but also has benefits for the wider economy as it brings a section of shoppers into the area that otherwise may not be able to do so.

Carol Dean went on to say: “It’s really rewarding to see so many longstanding members at today’s event. We moved to the Bus Station premises two years ago and have continued to go from strength to strength. Members really appreciate the independence the scheme provides and it is great to be able to acknowledge their support over the last decade”

Wrexham Shopmobility is free to users although donations to the charity are accepted. For further details on the Shopmobility scheme please contact Carol Dean on 01978 312390 or call in at the Bus Station on King Street.
