Out of Date Food Costs Tesco £10,000
Wrexham Magistrates have fined Tesco Stores Limited £7,600 and ordered them to pay £2,191 prosecution costs for selling out of date food at their store at Crescent Road, Wrexham.
The prosecution was taken by Wrexham Council’s Public Protection Department following visits to the store by Trading Standards Officers. On 17 November 2006 a Trading Standards Officer purchased six out of date items. On 29 December 2006 officers visited the store again and found 67 out of date items. The Company pleaded guilty to one charge relating to tofu purchased on the 17 November 2006 which was seven days out of date and two charges relating to sausage rolls found on 29 December 2006 which were up to six days out of date.
The magistrates commented that there had been a major breakdown in diligence which had led to a significant risk for consumers.
We take the enforcement of food safety very seriously and Andy Lewis, Chief Housing and Public Protection Officer, said “Our Officers carry out routine inspections at premises throughout Wrexham. I hope that this case emphasises the importance to food businesses that they must have adequate procedures in place to ensure that they comply with legal requirements."
