Walkabout Projects Celebrate Secured Funding

Thousands of people from across Wrexham and Flintshire can continue to benefit their health with the announcement that the Big Lottery Fund has awarded Groundwork Wrexham & Flintshire with £437,037 to develop physical activity and walking opportunities across both counties.

Groundwork Wrexham & Flintshire found out in December that it had been successful in securing 3 year funding from the Big Lottery Fund for the Walkabout Wrexham & Flintshire schemes. To celebrate the event Ian Lucas MP, Wrexham and Mark Tami MP, Flintshire joined walkers and volunteer Walk Leaders from both projects for a guided health walk around Gwersyllt on Friday 26th January.

Both projects which are part of the nationwide ‘Walking the Way to Health’ scheme and managed by Groundwork Wrexham & Flintshire currently run a programme of guided health walks across both counties. All walks are led by trained volunteer Walk Leaders and are suitable for all ages and abilities.

The new funding will start in April, with both projects expanding to work with a wider variety of target groups including young people and families. The projects will also continue to target people who lead sedentary lifestyles and those with special health conditions.

Ingrid Emerson MBE, Executive Director for Groundwork Wrexham & Flintshire said ‘The Trust is absolutely thrilled that these fabulous and successful projects have been safeguarded for a further 3 years’.
