Young people's room given an 'inspiring' makeover at Wrexham MaelorA room where young people can relax at Wrexham Maelor Hospital has been given a dramatic makeover.
The Young People’s Room, on the Children’s Ward at the hospital, has been given a new lease of life thanks to the Inspire project.
The room, provides young people at the hospital with a space of their own which is comfortable and gives them a number of activities to take part in. The room has been kitted out with the latest mod cons including new furniture, TV and DVD player, pool and football table, books and game consoles as well as a new lick of paint. The room can be used by anyone on the children’s ward.
The new room was officially opened by Mr Michael Williams, Chairman of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board; Councillor Arfon Jones, Lead Member for Children (Additional Learning, Family and Support) at Wrexham County Borough Council and Lisa Stanley.
The work was co-ordinated by Sara McKenzie, Youth Outreach Worker and Emmah Cunnah-Newall, Play Specialist, Children’s Ward
The refurbishment was carried out by the Inspire Youth Work in Hospital Team. Inspire is a partnership project , between Wrexham County Borough Council and the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and is is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
Inspire is a multi-agency team of youth workers, mental health workers and an assistant psychologist who provide support to young people aged 11-18 who have been admitted to Wrexham Maelor Hospital after episodes of self harm or, drug or alcohol misuse. Support is also offered to other vulnerable young people identified by staff.
The project also works on a voluntary basis with hospital departments, local schools and partner organisations to raise awareness of young people’s mental health problems. The ‘Inspire’ team have now supported hundreds of young people to overcome their problems, improve their self worth and make life-changing decisions.
Cllr Arfon Jones, Lead Member for Children (Additional Learning, Family and Support) said:

I would like to thank the whole Inspire team for all their hard work on this project and I believe it will provide young people with the perfect place to come and relax during their time in hospital.“
