Tapley Avenue Children's Respite Centre

Open For Business

Following a refurbishment there will be a re-launch of Tapley Avenue on the 19th of February 2002. The building of Tapley Avenue is a large house on the edge of Acton Park in Wrexham. There are 5 bedrooms, 3 living rooms, a stimulation room, 2 children’s bathrooms a kitchen plus additional staff sleeping accommodation and work areas. The 3 ground floor bedrooms and bathroom have been adapted to meet the needs of the children and young people who have a physical disability. The building has recently been refitted and refurbished for the comfort and well being of those children and young people who attend. The garden area is an ongoing project and plans are in place to make the area child friendly and safe.

What We Offer

Tapley Avenue Respite Centre is a service that offers short-term respite care, on a planned basis, to children and young people with a disability. This includes physical or learning disabilities, sensory impairments and or chronic illness. Our range of facilities and our dedicated staff team ensure that we can meet ALL of your child’s care needs.

Assessment Process

As an introduction to Tapley the needs of your child and family are firstly assessed by a social worker from the Child Health and Disability Team (Ysbyty Maelor). Through discussion with the Social Worker, options for respite at Tapley will be explored.

If it is agreed that Tapley can meet your child’s needs then an initial visit with your child may help you feel confident and comfortable and enable you to make your choice. At all times you will be part of the planning process, which leads to your child being offered a respite place at Tapley Avenue. If all goes well, during term time an overnight respite session would be from the end of one school day to the beginning of the next school day. Your child can leave for school from Tapley with usual transport and escorts (subject to organisation with the transport section of the council).

Who We Are

Wrexham County Borough Council runs the centre. We can offer for you and your child:

  • A successful track record of working with children with a disability.

  • Professional Staff who are trained and with work together in partnership with you to provide the best possible individual service for your child, within the confines of the care plan.

  • A key-worker system, which enables a member of staff to take a particular interest in all aspects of your child’s care and act as your contact, fielding any issues that may arise. The key-worker will attempt to attend all meetings with you in regard to your child’s welfare.

Improving Our Information & Communication

The staff at Tapley Avenue are currently working towards providing an "Entitlement Charter" for Children & Young People who use the service. This charter will outline the basic considerations and rights that will be offered to those who come to Tapley Avenue. The charter will cover issues ranging from basic care to being listened to. The staff plan to produce the charter in a range of different formats to ensure that - as much as possible - it can be understood by all children and young people who attend Tapley Avenue. The charter can be summed up through the following key words:

  • Holistic

  • Safety

  • Respect

  • Own Space

  • Advocacy

  • Individuality

  • Participation

  • Unhappy/Annoyed

  • Complain/Being Listened To

  • Recognition

  • Home

  • High Quality Care

Tapley Avenue Staff all have a professional, child centred approach to meeting the assessed need of your child and have good relationships with colleagues from Social Services, Health, Education and Voluntary agencies. The skills and qualifications of the staff team combine to offer high quality care and support to children and their families. We enjoy working with children and young people and endeavour to make their time with us as rewarding and enjoyable as possible.
