The Voluntary and Community Sector (also known as the Third Sector) is an important part of Wrexham’s communities they support the people of Wrexham at every stage of life. Voluntary and community organisations run nurseries, mother and toddler groups and play schemes for our children, youth groups for teens and sports groups for all ages.
As well as recreational groups there are organisations that help us when we need advice or help. These range from national to local organisations. The Red Cross helps people leaving hospital; the Citizen Advice Bureau gives advice and small local community groups cook a meal for older people within our communities.
There are over 300 registered charities within the Wrexham area and many smaller community and voluntary groups which are not required to register as a charity. Wrexham has an active volunteering culture helping in the hospital, providing transport, supporting environmental projects, to name just a few areas.
Wrexham Council award a number of Third Sector organisations with grants in order to support the delivery of Wrexham Council’s objectives. Wrexham Council also contract with over 92 Third Sector organisations to provide services on behalf of the people of Wrexham.
In order to support the Third Sector, Wrexham Council and the Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham (AVOW) have formed the Third Sector Liaison Group (TSLG) which is an officer working group, with Council Member representation. The group meets on a regular basis and identifies ways to support the local Third Sector by:
The TSLG oversee the implementation of two policy documents, “The Funding and Monitoring Code of Practice” and the “Third Sector Commissioning Guidance.”
Both these documents are reviewed periodically and audited to ensure they are being complied with.
