Youth Work in the Community

Detached Work and Street Work

Detached and street work projects engage with young people in places where they choose to gather, it can be street corners, parks, cafes, leisure centres or public places. Street workers are often able to contact young people who have no other youth provision in their local area or who, for what ever reason choose not to use existing facilities.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Wrexham

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a programme of voluntary activities for young people between the ages of 14 and 25. Young people will take part in a range of activities which will include an expedition under canvas, making a Service to their community, following a skill of their choosing and participating in a sport. They can either choose activities new to them or use the Award to accredit existing activities. There are over 600 activities which qualify under the Award.

In Wrexham in 2003/4, 7.9% of the population of 14 - 17 year olds took part in the Award. They can do this through their school, voluntary organisation, Youth Centre or one of the Open Award Centres which run in the area. Schools involved with the Award are Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Ysgol Clywedog, Grango, Ruabon, St. Christopher's, The Maelor School and St. Joseph's.
