Wrexham Allotment and Leisure Gardeners Association

Welcome to the new season!

The Allotment and Leisure Gardeners' Association Working In Partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council.

2009 And Raring To Go!

2008 continued our successes of previous years and I list below just some of our achievements during 2008.

We will open the Price’s Lane shop again for the 2009 season on the 7th of February 10 am until 12 noon. Please come on down to see what is on offer.

During 2008 our shop at Price’s Lane proved to be a real magnet for all types of gardeners, whether allotment holders, private gardeners, young, old, expert or beginner, everybody came and bought huge amounts from us and made 2008 more successful than 2007.

We at the shop are aware that 2009 is going to be a tough time for everyone but with our prices and service we are still very competitive so come on down and take a look.

We are not putting a price list on the website this year but if you need to have specific information then please visit the Price’s Lane Allotment Shop or email marvellousgardens@btinternet.com.

Our 2008 Achievements

The Annual Show

A superb show was held at St Margaret’s Hall yet again with Don Owen doing a brilliant job again as our professional judge and Gillian and Barbara from St Margaret’s Mothers Union judging our new chutney and jam sections. At the show we announced the winners of the Best Allotment Competition which was held for the first time by the Association in conjunction with the council.   The night raised £100 which was split between Hope House and Nightingale Hospice.

National Garden Scheme Day

For the first time Price’s Lane opened its gates on July the 12th. I have never seen the site look so magnificent and it was a credit to all plot holders, volunteers, St Margaret’s Mothers’ Union, staff at Rhosddu Primary School and council staff for making the day a huge success.

Wrexham In Bloom – Silver Gilt Award 2008

The second year saw Wrexham go one better than 2007 and the town was awarded silver gilt – fantastic – with some very positive comments from the two RHS judges. The day of judging was one of the hottest days that Wrexham enjoyed and travelling down to meet the judges early in the morning made me feel very proud of what we had achieved. The route this year began in Rossett and went through Gresfod up to the town centre and then around the Homebase retail park where the two newly planted roundabouts were on show and then back to Alyn Waters Country Park. RHS Britain In Bloom is more than just flowers, the judges look at the involvement of community groups, schools, the youth, recycling efforts, litter etc. Price’s Lane Allotments were on the route this year and the judges were very pleased to see the way that we worked our plots with the huge choice of veg and fruit and of course the ever growing number of people who are keeping chickens. Victoria Infant School with help planted up the two flower beds by the Guildhall with a sweet and sour theme using perennial planting and they will continue to have the responsibility of making sure they look good with our help for some time to come.

2008 - Money raised for charity

As a registered charity ourselves we feel very proud of our achievements for 2008 and in total nearly £600 was raised for Hope House, Nightingale Hospice and the Yellow Book Cancer Charities.

What Plans For 2009?

  • Price’s Lane shop opening 7th February – 10.00 am – 12.00 noon and then every Saturday morning until the end of October.
  • National Garden Scheme day – Price’s Lane allotments
  • Wrexham in Bloom involvement
  • Annual Show
  • Continuing our fundraising for local charities
  • Continue our involvement with local community groups and schools
  • Continue to work closely with wrexham council to ensure the success of the four council run allotment sites.

What's on Sale At The Shop for 2009

We will be continuing to stock an excellent range of reduced peat and peat free products. More and more we need to be looking for products that are more sustainable and these products appear to be the answer. As gardeners we need to be in the forefront of protecting our wonderful world and the allotment shop is working very hard to go in this direction.

We will continue to sell our other successful ranges of compost and fertilisers including ericaceous compost which is ideal for those acid loving plants such as acers, magnolias, heathers and of course for those blueberry plants.

We have a fantastic selection of seed potatoes coming from the same place that we used in 2008. They were of fantastic quality at an incredible price and this will be continued for 2009.  Our Potatoes are on £1.20 per kilo - whatever the variety.

Another beauty of the shop is that you can buy kilos of potash, or potato fertiliser and much more instead of having to purchase that huge bag which tends to then languish in the shed going hard. Our wonderful volunteers weigh whatever quantity you need. Fleece, and bubble wrap can also be purchased by the metre.

Anyone can become a member of the Shop and the association by paying a small membership fee of £3.00.

So if you haven’t already visited the shop, come on down and say hello. The real bonus of our SHOP is that you will be served by genuine gardeners who really do know what they are talking about and will gladly pass on their wealth of experience. These knowledgeable gardeners have chosen the products on sale so what more convincing do you need?

Happy growing...
