Smoke Control Areas

Smoke Control Areas were originally introduced to combat the smog’s of the 1950’s and 1960’s which were blamed for premature deaths of hundreds of people.

Much of Wrexham town is covered by various smoke control areas, the locations of which are shown on the map below.

If you are within a smoke control area it is an offence to emit smoke from a chimney of a building, from a furnace or from any fixed boiler. It is also an offence to acquire “unauthorised fuel” unless it is used in an exempt appliance. If you are thinking of having a solid fuel burner at your premises, your retailer should be able to provide you with details of which ones are exempt. Alternatively the UK smoke control area’s website (external link) provides details of authorised fuels and exempt appliances.

To find out whether you live in a smoke control area please search on the map below. Properties IN the shaded area are IN a smoke control area.
