Wrexham gained the Silver Gilt Award in this year’s Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom awards for city category. This is a major achievement for Wrexham and is due to the very strong support and participation given by communities along this year’s route.
This is the first year Wrexham has been invited to enter to represent Wales in the RHS Britain in Bloom finals and to gain a Silver Gilt Award is a great achievement. A Silver Gilt Award means the entry is of a very high standard which meets virtually all of the judging criteria and includes sections of exceptional standard. Wrexham joined Richmond on Thames, York and Bury in gaining this award in the city category.
We have received a lot of positive feedback from members of the public this year on the flowers in the Town Centre and the improvements we have carried out. The work has been made possible through the Tidy Towns grant from the Welsh Government and sponsorship from companies.
Across the County Borough our Community Environmental Awards and Best Kept Village/Community Awards have encouraged other communities to get involved in improving their local area. Chirk won the Best Kept Village Award, Rossett RECAP Group won the Best Environmental Community Award and Caia Park Environmental Group won the Best Garden Competition.
Chirk gained the Silver Gilt Award in this year’s RHS Britain in Bloom awards for Urban Community. This is a major achievement for Chirk. A Silver Gilt Award means the entry is of a very high standard which meets virtually all of the judging criteria and includes sections of exceptional standard. Chirk were just pipped to the winning post by Uddington (Glasgow) who gained a Silver Gilt and the category winner. They competed against Woodlesford (Leeds), Walthamstow Village (London), Moor (Huntingdon), Moseley (Birmingham), Didsbury (Manchester).
Chirk also came first in the Wales in Bloom Competition, in the small country town category, beating Tenby to the first prize in the competition. Chirk’s achievements are outstanding as they also gained the RHS Britain in Bloom Anglian Home Improvements Community Award.
For the last four years Wrexham County Borough Council has entered the Royal Horticultural Society ‘Wales in Bloom’ competition. In 2007 we were awarded Silver Merit, and in 2008, 2009 and 2010 we were awarded a Silver Gilt.
This year Wrexham has also been invited to enter Britain in Bloom as well as Wales in Bloom.
The Britain in Bloom and ‘Wales in Bloom’ campaign includes:
We want to improve on the result that we had in 2010 and to do this we need your support.
The route will be going through Rhosnesni, Borras, Acton, Rhosddu, Offa and also through the town centre.
Other areas of the borough which are not on the route will also benefit from our efforts. Wrexham Council departments will be working closely with Community Councils and local business and together with Welsh Assembly Keep Wales Tidy (Tidy Town) funding we will carry out a number of environment improvements this year.
The purpose of the competition is to bring all sections of the community together to create a cleaner, greener Wrexham borough, through lasting improvements to the environment.
Previous ways people have helped have been by planting up planters, donating time to do litter picks and community clean ups, recycling projects and assisting in wildlife and tree planting projects.
Don’t worry if you don’t have time to spare you could always show off your gardening skills by planting up your front Garden. If you haven’t got a garden you could always plant up a hanging basket which would help us improve our chances of winning gold and putting Wrexham on the map.
