Translocation of Ginkgo trees in Wrexham

Translocation of Ginkgo trees in Wrexham

During the week leading up to Christmas 2005 Wrexham Council's Environment Department Tree Section moved 10 historic trees, Ginkgo biloba, or maidenhair tree, from Eagles Meadow to Acton Park.

Ginkgos as are not particularly common in the UK and would generally be found in formal gardens or arboreta.  They are native to China and are thought to have been around for some 200 million years making them one of the oldest known species of tree.

The Journey in Photographs

As part of the redevelopment of the former Asda site the Ginkgo trees have been lifted from the concrete rings in which they were planted in (Photo 1) during the early 1990’s

The trees are root pruned to remove any broken or damaged roots and wrapped in hessian with a wire retaining basket (Photo B) to keep them warm and to avoid drying out.

The trees are transported in a trailer to Acton Park and pulled by a specialist vehicle to minimise any damage and compaction to the grassed area next to the lake where the trees are to be planted (Photo 3 &3b).

The tree pits are excavated using a mini digger with tracks reducing the amount of soil compaction around the tree pit. (Photo 4)  Trees are then lifted and guided into the pits using a sling from the mini digger attached to the tree lifting equipment (Photo 5).  Once placed upright (Photo 6) the tree is anchored using a purpose designed underground anchoring system that is driven into the ground (Photo 7).
