Food Hygiene Awards

In 2002 Wrexham Council launched the Welsh Food Hygiene Scheme.

The Welsh Food Hygiene Award Scheme aims to give recognition to food premises which have attained and maintained high standards of cleanliness and food hygiene practices.

How does the scheme work?

There are three levels of award that can be achieved by food businesses, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

A food business can qualify for an award when an unannounced food hygiene inspection is carried out by one of the authorised officers of the food safety team.

Following the inspection, the officer makes an assessment of standards observed at the time of the visit. They will also consider past history and previous compliance of the premises as part of this assessment.

The assessment leads to an overall score being allocated to the premises which is used to determine how often the premises will be inspected in the future. This score is used to determine the level of food hygiene award that the premises may be eligible for.

At the time of inspection the food business operator will be informed on their award status. Officers will also be able to provide further information on how to achieve a higher award.

In Wrexham the Welsh Food Hygiene Award Scheme has been linked with the Food Hygiene Star Rating Scheme which was launched in December 2006.
