About Trading Standards

The Trading Standards Service is part of the Housing and Public Protection Department and operates alongside other Regulatory Services e.g. Environmental Health.

The Service exists for the benefit of consumers and businesses within the Wrexham area. Our aim is to ensure a fair and safe trading environment and to advance Animal Health and Welfare. We perform this role through law enforcement, advice and education. We strive to achieve this through a number of key service activity areas:

  • Advise, assist and educate consumers to help them buy wisely and take action on faulty goods and services. This is done in conjunction with Consumer Direct Wales.

  • Advise and assist businesses to help them comply with Trading Standards legislation including Quality Management systems.

  • Inspect trade premises on a risk assessed basis for compliance with a range of Trading Standards legislation e.g. correct pricing, accurate descriptions and food labelling.

  • Carry out in-depth projects into specific goods, services and trading practices such as food descriptions, safety of electrical goods and car servicing.

  • Prosecute traders for breaches of legislation e.g. car clocking, counterfeiting and vehicle overloading.

  • Test weighing and measuring equipment for accuracy.

  • Licence premises for petroleum, fireworks and poisons.

  • Licence animal movements.
