Wrexham Local Access Forum (LAF)

Wrexham County Borough Council set up the Local Access Forum in November 2002 in accordance with the provisions of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. The Forum advises the local authority, the Countryside Council for Wales and others on the improvement of public access to land for open-air recreation and the enjoyment of the area. This includes both the improvement of public rights of way and the new right of access to open country and registered common land.

The membership has been selected to give a good cross-section of those affected by the legislation and includes landowners, foresters, conservationists, walkers, horseriders, cyclists, anglers and wildlife enthusiasts. The Council has a duty to ensure that the Forum remains as balanced as possible between the various groups using the countryside.

All meetings are open to the public and will usually be held in the Guildhall.

New Wrexham Local Access Forum Members Wanted!

Wrexham Local Access Forum was set up in 2002 under the provisions of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Although the forum is administered by the local authority, its decisions and actions are wholly independent of it.

The function of the forum is to provide advice to Wrexham County Borough Council, the Countryside Council for Wales and others as appropriate. It advises as to the improvement of public access to land in the area for the purposes of open-air recreation and the enjoyment of the area in ways which take account of land management, social, economic, environmental and educational interests.

The second 3 year term draws to a close in November and a new forum is to be appointed. All the existing members will be invited to apply for a further term and it is likely that many will apply and succeed in securing a further term. However, the Wrexham forum is rather small and would welcome a few new members. Also, It is sometimes the case that the farmers and landowners at the meetings are outnumbered by walkers and riders, so applications from people with a professional interest in the land are especially welcome as it is vital that the forum is balanced between ‘users’ and ‘owners’. We would also like to see applications from cyclists and physically disabled people.

If you have interests in the county borough, are wholly positive towards the function of the forum, and enjoy lively debate and can attend 4 or 5 meetings a year, please get in touch.

The next meeting will be held on Friday, 6 February 2009 at 1.30 pm in Committee Room 3 at the Guildhall, Wrexham .
