What is Closed Circuit Television?
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is a television system which operates on a "closed loop" basis. Unlike broadcast television which is available to anyone with a suitable receiver, CCTV pictures are only available to those directly connected to the loop, which in Wrexham's case is the central monitoring control room. The loop is a physical link consisting of a fibre optic cable which carries the picture from the camera to a monitor.

Who sees the picture?
Wrexham County Borough Council employs 8 officers who continually monitor the pictures 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year. Any pictures viewed by the operators are also seen simultaneously by the Eastern Division of North Wales Police at Wrexham and the North Wales Police Force Communications Centre at St. Asaph.

How long are video recordings kept?
Video recordings are kept for a maximum period of 2 months unless they are required for evidential purposes for criminal prosecution. In such instances, tapes are retained by North Wales Police until after the court cases are completed, including any appeal which might be made. At the end of the 2 month period, any tape not required as potential court evidence is erased.
