Incapacity Benefit

Who can claim Incapacity Benefit?
Incapacity Benefit is for:

  • People who are not able to work due to illness, and

  • are aged 16 to 60 for women, 16 to 65 for men, and

  • who have paid National Insurance contributions, and

  • are not in receipt of Statutory Sick Pay.

You may also be entitled to Income Support or other help with housing costs. There are special rules for people aged 16 to 20.

To claim you must first obtain a sick note from your Family Doctor (G.P.).
