The sample passer took samples from the molten steel and passed them to the laboratory for analysis. The short cardboard tube was used to take the samples. The sample was placed in the blue canister, which travelled along an air tube to the laboratory. Different tests were performed on the samples and alterations made to the molten steel as required.
