4. Ready to Roll

Inside the Electric Melting Shop

The ingots arrive on wagons at the rolling mill. Furnace men place each ingot in the reheating furnace. The ingots have to be hot enough to go through the rolling mill. The men remove the ingots from the furnace before they melt. They are now ready to be rolled.

A: The reheating furnace
B: Cold steel ingot
C: Heat the ingots to about 1200°C
D: Very hot steel ingot
E: The Heater – he is responsible for the reheating furnace.
