5. The Big Squeeze

Inside the Electric Melting Shop

Take the ingots over to the mill. The mill will slowly squeeze or reduce each ingot into a bloom. Take each bloom to the roughing mill. Keep passing the bloom backwards and forwards through this mill. Gradually the mill will shape the bloom to the required size of billet. Finally complete the process by putting the billet through the finishing mill. Cut the billet into lengths according to the customer’s wishes.

A: Roughing mill
B: Mill Roller – he adjusts the gap between the rolls using this lever.
C: Steel bloom
D: Rolls shape the steel
E: Three rolls – you can pass the steel backwards and forward through this mill
F: Finishing mill
G: Head Roller – He is in charge and is responsible for the finished section of steel.
H: This mill rolls the steel once to finish the job
I: Turn the steel billet 90° each time it passes through the mill
J: They worked twenty minutes on, twenty minutes off during their shift.
