Following The Flame (27 Jun - 15 Sept 2012, Wrexham County Borough Museum)

Following the Flame (FtF) is a major new project exploring Wales’ proud sporting heritage, led by Wrexham Heritage Service.

Sport defines us. We are a small nation, but our record of achievement – in a wide range of sports on the international stage – is inspiring. We really do punch well above our weight.

Lynn Davies, CBE

At just one two-thousandth of the total World population, Wales’ record of achievement in both Olympic and Paralympic Games is hugely out of proportion to our seemingly insignificant place within the world. It’s not just in boxing that Wales punches well above its weight!

FtF will use the build up to the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics as the main impetus to explore and celebrate the inspiring history of our often-forgotten Welsh men and women who attended the Games. At the heart of the project will be a major Oral History programme of video interviews with those athletes still alive and / or their relatives, friends and supporters to create an important new living history of Welsh participation in the Olympics and Paralympics. This “people's history” will ensure that our story is told through the experiences of actual participants, at whatever level they engaged with the Olympic ideal.

In addition, we have been touring two Mini Exhibitions to stimulate interest in the Project, with a full education workshop programme, since September 2008. These will continue well into 2012.

And we will be touring a Community Exhibition to smaller venues throughout Wales from September 2011.

How to get involved

If you have had a previous involvement, at whatever level or capacity (as competitor, family member, official or spectator) with the Olympics or Paralympics – including the 2008 Beijing Games – or are working towards being part of a future Games, the FtF team want to hear from you.

We’re particularly looking for people who are willing to talk about their experiences on film. For further details about these interviews, or how you, your venue, school or organisation can get involved in the project in general, please contact:
