After the demolition of the two pit headgears at Gresford Colliery in the 1970s, the leaders of the local mining community and surviving relatives of the dead miners led a campaign for a proper memorial. They were determined, now that the colliery was gone, that the 266 miners should not be forgotten. It was a long, but in the end, successful campaign. The service of dedication was not without controversy, but the memorial still stands and is central to the annual commemorations to those who died down the Dennis pit.
