Welcome to Wrexham Heritage Services Learning Pages

We offer a range of hands-on facilitated learning sessions for early years and beyond at Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives. Learning sessions are available at other venues by prior arrangement.

All sessions can be delivered through the medium of Welsh. For further information and to speak to a member of the Learning Team please call 01978 297460 or email museumeduction@wrexham.gov.uk.

The venue for all sessions is Wrexham Museum.

Ceramics Foundation This workshop focuses upon the Bronze Age skeletal remains of Brymbo Man and his beaker. We examine how the use of ceramics have changed, with the opportunity to handle real ceramics from our collection. Pupils make their very own clay beaker to take home. 4, 6, 7 April 2017 No
My First Museum Visit Foundation Pupils will have the opportunity to explore some of the museum’s key artefacts on display and learn about the role of museums.

Introduction to Archaeology Foundation
This hands on session examines how archaeologists piece together life in the past from clues left behind. Pupils will take part in their very own mini archaeological excavation.

The Victorians KS2 19th century Wrexham is brought to life via different activities such as copperplate handwriting using quills or slates, costumes and mystery objects. Pupils can even smell Victorian Wrexham!

WWI KS2 Pupils will explore the journey of civilian to trained soldier on the front line in this workshop which ties in with our temporary exhibition ‘Fighting on all Fronts: The Royal Welsh Fusiliers during the First World War’. 14, 15, 17, 18, 21, 22, 24, 25 November 2016 Yes
WWII KS2 It’s 1939 and you are being evacuated to Wrexham. Pupils will discover why children were evacuated and their experiences. Pupils will also find out the role the museum building played during WWII as well as handle real and replica WWII objects.

Castle Detectives KS2 This session will take place at Holt Castle. Pupils will become ‘ Castle Detectives’ and learn why a castle was built in Holt and what life was like inside the castle. They will also decide upon the best way to storm the castle and steal Sir William Stanley’s treasure, and how long it would take to patrol the castle walls 6, 13, 20 June 2017 Yes

Sessions can be arranged for Foundation and KS2 pupils at Bersham Ironworks, Minera Lead Mines and Holt Castle.


If your school can’t visit one of our venues, a member of the learning team can come out to you. Most of our themed sessions are available as outreach workshops, delivered by Museum staff in your own classroom.

Holiday Clubs & After-School Clubs

One of our Learning Team can bring the ‘Museum on Wheels’ to your group.  You can explore various topics using artefacts and costumes to bring the past to life.
