Wrexham Museum Diary

The next twelve – fifteen months are going to be very eventful for Wrexham County Borough Museum and for the staff who work there.

Wrexham County Borough Museum – a great building and soon to be a better museum.

  • The staff and the displays have to move out.
  • The heritage service has to move to Bersham Heritage Centre.
  • The building has to be emptied.
  • Tenders for the construction work made, judged, and accepted.
  • The builders have to move in, do their work,and then move out.
  • The designers and the museum staff have to create the new displays.
  • These are just a few of the jobs that will be happening over the coming year.

May 18th

Interesting study visit to the recently re-opened People’s History Museum in Manchester to look at a similar glass frontage to the new museum in Wrexham and their new gallery spaces.

May 20th

Continued working with Years 2 and 3 at Victoria School on the Bellevue Park centenary project.

May 24th

Took the mini ‘Museum on Wheels’ to All Saints, Gresford to visit their After-School club. We looked at childhood through the ages and the children met ‘Master Owain’, ‘Lady Margaret’, ‘Agatha’, ‘Hal’, ‘the Lady Elizabeth’, ‘Victoria’, ‘Albert’ and ‘Tommy’. The children enjoyed dressing up, playing with the toys and making thaumatropes.

May 25th

Visited Ysgol Bryn Tabor to help Year 4 with their work on World War 2.

May 27th

Continued working with Years 2 and 3 at Victoria School on the Bellevue Park centenary project. Lots of squares to iron to ‘fix’ the colours.

June 2nd

Took the museum roadshow to Alyn Waters Community Fun Day. First time out for the big roadshow and it was very well received.

June 3rd

Had a lovely time at the Friends After School Group at Acton Park Primary. Introduced children to characters from the past. The children enjoyed dressing up.

June 4th

Had a lovely time at the Temps After School Group at Rofft School, Marford. I really enjoy getting out and about and meeting new people.

June 8th

Back to Victoria School so the children could advise me on the order of their fabric pictures. Now where is the needle and thread?

June 11th

Attended Alexandra School’s celebration of 1910 and talked to the children about school then and also played some traditional playground games.

June 12th

Attended Minera Fun Day with the costumes and invited people to make their own World Cup thaumatropes – if only I could remember the flags of the countries taking part!

June 14th

Re-visited Alexandra School to work with two classes and help with their individual projects. Edwardian school teacher in the morning and a member of the WVS in the afternoon. Who said time travel is only for the Doctor.

June 15th

Visited Bwlchgwyn After School Club to talk about schools in Victorian times. The children enjoyed writing with the pen and ink and playing with the marbles.

June 17th

Spent a very enjoyable afternoon at Highfield Care Home with the residents and staff playing games and talking about toys we all had when we were children. I failed completely in trying to remember the skipping rhymes we used to sing.

June 18th

Gave a presentation about the museum redevelopment to a group of teachers and advisors.

June 22nd

Visited Bwlchgwyn Out of School Club to talk about what it was like for children during the war. We looked at photographs and then made identity cards and models of Anderson Shelters.

June 24th

Visited Alexandra School to see their ‘Performance Day’. The children were great and thoroughly enjoyed showing off their talents to a large audience.

June 26th

Gave the museum roadshow its second outing when we visited Chirk. The sun shone, the entertainment was fun and lots of thaumatropes were made.

June 29th

Visited Bwlchgwyn Out of School Club with the costumes and talked about fashion through the ages. We created a living time-line and then the children became designers – watch out Gok!
