On-going management of the World Heritage Site

In 2006 a Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal Steering Group was established by Wrexham Council.

The group, which meets quarterly, was set up to involve key partners in the nomination and ongoing management of the site. It includes representatives from:

  • Wrexham County Borough Council
  • British Waterways
  • Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales
  • Denbighshire County Council
  • Cadw
  • Shropshire County Council
  • English Heritage
  • Inland Waterways Association
  • UNESCO Cymru Wales

The group is chaired by Dr Dawn Roberts of Wrexham Council. Wrexham also currently provides the secretariat.

Five sub groups have been established to progress specific areas of work:

  • Visitor Management and Economic Regeneration Sub Group
  • Planning / Landscape Sub Group
  • Heritage and Conservation Sub Group
  • Community Development Sub Group
  • Education and Identification Sub Group

Now World Heritage Status has been achieved, the steering group and sub groups are turning their attention to on-going site management, including continuing work on increasing visitor car parking, signage and interpretation, access by public transport, conservation works, joined-up planning policy, landscape management and education.
