The United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) inscribes up to 45 sites across the world each year.
Sites are nominated by State Parties, (e.g. UK Government), meet rigorous expert scrutiny and must fulfil one or more of the 10 criteria set by UNESCO. There are currently some 830 World Heritage Sites in 138 countries.
There are 26 UK sites already on the list but only two in Wales: the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward I in Gwynedd and the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape in South Wales.
Since 2002 the UK has been limited to putting forward no more than one nomination each year. Recent successful UK nominations have been:
