200th Birthday Celebrations

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, one of the most spectacular structures in Wales, took centre stage as the year of celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the mighty Aqueduct drew to a stunning finale on 26th November 2005.

Partners British Waterways, Wrexham County Borough Council and Northern Marches Cymru had put in place a year long celebration which included community and visitor events, from sponsored walks to art workshops, with the aqueduct the main focus of world-wide media interest. The celebrations came to a climax on Saturday 26 November, 200 years to the day when the aqueduct opened in 1805, with a 16-gun salute and firework display set to music.
