Solve the history mystery by looking at a selection of Victorian artefacts. Work out what they are and who owned them. Is it the cook, servant or doctor?

Experience Victorian schooling via a short lesson in role, focusing on religious instruction arithmetic and strict discipline.

Some worksheet usage based on exhibition panels focusing on Queen Victoria's visit to Wrexham in 1889, workhouses, timelines and census returns.

The Workhouse Waif

Pupils participate in an interactive storytelling session based on Ann Williams a workhouse Waif from Wrexham. Inspired by archive sources pupils will have the opportunity to dress up, write on slates and handle artefacts.

Children compare Victorian schooling to the modern classroom. A short lesson in role is optional.

Using pictures, pupils look at the characteristics of old and new toys. Each child makes their own thaumatrope, a simple Victorian toy that creates an optical illusion.

How did the working practices and lives of the colliers change during the 20th century? Explore this important history through film, witness, historic artefacts, and activities in this special exhibition and school programme.
