Susan Young - There and Back Again: An Animated Journey

PUBLIC EVENT - Creative Futures Glyndwr Presents: ___Susan Young - There and Back Again: An Animated Journey___ Director Susan Young shares her experience of setting up and running an animated commercials company, the advantages and pitfalls of going it alone, and her eventual return to academic study at the Royal College of Art. ___Biography___ While studying graphic design at Liverpool Polytechnic, Susan was introduced to the idea that animation could be both a vehicle for the expression of emotion and a means of political commentary. Inspired by this, she made Thin Blue Lines, a film that describes the Toxteth riots of 1981 from a personal perspective. Carnival, Susan’s 1985 Royal College of Art MA graduation film, features the calligraphic line, fluidity and metamorphic movement that came to define her commercial work. On leaving the RCA she was commissioned by the United Nations to direct The Doomsday Clock, a film about multilateral disarmament, with co-director Jonathan Hodgson. Subsequently Young focused on the combination of music and animation, collaborating with musicians including David Byrne (Beleza Tropical: Umbabarauma), record producers such as Alan Douglas (Jimi Hendrix: Fire), and record labels including Island Records and Island Visual Arts. Susan has directed title sequences for major sporting events such as the World Cricket Series and the BAFTA- nominated American Football Big Match, but most of her commercial practice revolved around advertising, where she quickly established an international reputation as an animation director with a unique drawing style. Susan has recently returned to academic study and is currently exploring the therapeutic potential of animation in relation to psychological trauma at the Royal College of Art as part of a practice-based PhD. _____________________________________________ In 2015, Creative Futures Glyndwr opens it's doors to the public for the first time and all for FREE. Jinx 103

Jinx 103 is a breathtakingly energetic dance of lightning fast footwork, leg twisting and weaving, high kicks and turning jumps. It is also a vibrant body percussion with complex sound patterns of clapping and slapping, clicking and stamping. This dynamic performance mixes traditional and contemporary dance and has engaged audiences around the world including Lebanon, Mexico, Cuba, Italy and South Africa. Hungarians József Trefeli and Gábor Varga grew up in USSR and Australia respectively where each trained in both contemporary and traditional Hungarian folk dance. They came together to make Jinx 103, combining this common dance heritage learnt on opposite sides of the globe. Why JINX 103? In many cultures, when two people accidentally say the same thing simultaneously, there is a tradition to say a word quickly to ward off bad luck - in English it's “jinx”, while in Hungary it's “103”. "an astonishing performance... entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time." - A Pásztóy "Breathtaking. A humorous and superb duet… revisiting the rules of folk dances and rejuvenating them with an explosive manner." - Geneviève Charras, La Fleur du Dimanche Concept, choreography, dance: József Trefeli, Gábor Varga Music: Frédérique Jarabo

New Tae Kwon Do Centre opening in Wrexham

Students and staff at Ady Jones’ Tae Kwon Do Academy are thrilled to have a new dedicated training venue open in Wrexham. Based on Wrexham Industrial Estate, the Family Martial Arts Centre is the first of its kind to open in Wrexham, and boasts a fully matted training area of over 2,400 square feet, as well as a fully enclosed mezzanine viewing area and cafe, changing facilities and a gym area. Dedicated to providing the highest quality of coaching and instruction, Master Ady Jones has a 6th Degree Black Belt and is a multiple World, European and National Champion. Ady says: “We are opening a facility that is much needed in the area and will benefit the Wrexham community, there is nothing else comparable to it in the whole of North Wales and with Tae Kwon Do being the UK’s fastest growing Martial Art, our town and the surrounding area was in much need of a safe and positive environment for adults and children to learn this fantastic sport.” Classes are available 7 days per week, with a full timetable that caters for children aged 3 years and up through to adults. Family classes are also available, so you can spend some quality time with the kids whilst learning new skills and keeping fit at the same time. The new centre will be hosting an open weekend on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September between 10am & 4pm Ady says all are welcome to stop by for a visit and see the new facilities.
