Danny Baker - Cradle to the Stage

The stage has always been my first love. Let me put that another way. I have never done anything like this before in my life. However, to travel from town to town addressing a fabulous gathering of like-minded chums each night seems to me exactly what Shakespeare would have done had not the hefty rent at The Globe kept him in London. As a consequence, William Shakespeare toured about as frequently as Kate Bush. Well not me. I own very few theatres anymore and so I am now totally free to charge about here and there wowing the folks with my anecdotal back catalogue, games involving sausages and impressive six octave range. No two nights of this extravaganza will be the same. This is less of a boast than admission that a) I am hopeless at learning scripts and b) I still have no idea what I am going to include. Perhaps you can help? If you’ve read my books, watched the series based on them or, indeed, ever caught anything I have presented on television/radio then maybe you might contribute to the feast of reason and flow of the soul that I guarantee these evenings will contain. Questions like, “Did your friend really eat saveloys from a pith helmet” or “What was meeting John Lennon/Michael Jackson/David Bowie/Kenneth Williams like?” or, I suspect, most popular of all “How comes you’ve made so many rotten TV programs, Dan?” A night at the theatre can either be deep dish or high kicking. What I promise to haul before you is very much in the latter category. Content wise I will make Springsteen and Dodd look like short changing slackers. I can’t wait. This is the sort of radio I’ve always wanted to do, ie, radio without radio. Just me and you.

Chamber St David’s Day Charity Ball

Returning for the third time, the renowned Chamber Annual Charity St David’s Day Ball is set to light up your social calendar with its arrival on Friday the 3rd March. Held at the beautiful and luxurious Quay Hotel, overlooking the beautiful Conwy Estuary, the night promises to be one of elegance, great company and exquisite dining – It is certainly not to be missed! The St David’s Day Charity Black Tie Ball Event is generously being sponsored by Cullimore Dutton, a celebrated and highly successful legal firm, incorporating traditional values with a modern outlook. Following tradition the Ball will support a deserving charity that will be chosen in due course by our Focus Group, with all the proceeds from the evening being donated at the end. Guests will be greeted with a complimentary glass of sparkling rosé on arrival at the breath-taking venue, all before sitting down for a delicious gourmet three-course meal, with hot beverages and mints to follow. In traditional form the fantastic Charity Auction & Raffle will follow suit, with after dinner entertainment still to be announced. Attending last year’s Charity St David’s Day Ball, Scott Burns, Dealer Principal at Evans Halshaw Ford Bretton said “Having booked a table of 10 for me and my colleagues the Ball was a fantastic opportunity to socialise as one in the surrounds of the beautiful Quay Hotel. Any Members who donate a prize will be included in the programme on the evening and also feature in the next edition of the Chamber’s Quarterly Magazine. Black Star Riders

Black Star Riders are hitting the road next year with a comprehensive UK tour in support of their new album ‘Heavy Fire’, set for release in early 2017. After a full year off the road, Black Star Riders (Ricky Warwick, Scott Gorham, Damon Johnson, Robert Crane & Jimmy DeGrasso) are back with a 16 date UK & Ireland run, joined by Scottish rockers Gun and The Amorettes. Ricky Warwick says “it seems like ages since we did the Leppard/Whitesnake tour so we are all really looking forward to be back out on the road with BSR. Our third album will be out just prior to the dates so its going to be great to play tracks from that along with favorites from the first two records also. CIVIC SOCIETY TALK - "THE GUMMOWS: ARCHITECTURAL BUILDERS OF WREXHAM"

The Wrexham Area Civic Society presents a talk entitled "THE GUMMOWS: ARCHITECTURAL BUILDERS OF WREXHAM". The speaker will be Mr. Alister Williams, renowned as the Editor and Publisher of the comprehensive "Encyclopaedia of Wrexham". A Benjamin Gummow came to Wrexham in the early 1800's to work on the extensions to Eaton Hall, then on the Wynnstay Estate. Family relations, son, nephew, grandson were all subsequently involved in the building industry (although one as the first Borough Engineer of Wrexham). They were responsible for many of the fine Victorian houses still to be seen in the Wrexham area. The meeting is open to all, and free to attend. Touched by Greatness: The Story of Welsh International Football

Timed to coincide with Wales’s first appearance at an international football finals since 1958, this exhibition chronicles the heroic endeavours of the Wales’s greatest footballers. The right of a Wales team to exist has often been questioned and its stars refused permission to play; however, the team has become one of the unifiers of Wales and its star players – John Charles, Ian Rush, Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale, some of the most famous Welshmen in the world. The eventful story is told through the artefacts and archives of the Welsh Football Collection.

The Unthanks

A wistful mother in the 1950s makes some simple home recordings in her family sitting room. Little could she have known that decades later, her son would become one of the most poetic and influential songwriters ever, or that more than sixty years later, the dust would be blown off her own songs. On the surface, the 2013 release of Molly Drake’s work could easily have been perceived as just a curious footnote and jigsaw piece in explaining the enormous talent of Nick Drake. In the eyes of The Unthanks however, and increasingly amongst others, Molly’s work is extraordinary enough to rank alongside and independently of her brilliant son. With encouragement from the Drake musical estate and the full blessing and enthusiasm of celebrated actress Gabrielle Drake (Molly’s daughter and Nick’s sister) The Unthanks are sure to relish the opportunity. The Mercury nominated mavericks of British folk music are bound to treat the challenge with the same love and diligence for their subject as they did when reinterpreting the work of Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnson's. This tour of her reimagined work will be accompanied by an album release of Molly Drake's work - Diversions Vol 4. - the latest in a growing line of intrepid projects by The Unthanks. Never intended for public release, the quality of Molly Drake’s recordings was modest, and the ideas more like sketches than fully formed results. In a climate where films, stories and music are being rehashed for spurious repeat exploitation, if ever a body of work actually merited reappraisal and fresh presentation, surely the work of Molly Drake is it. Her songs share plenty of common ground with her son’s - charming and bittersweet, yet dark and pensive.

Chamber Lunch at MacDonald New Blossoms Hotel

The Chamber of Commerce is delighted to invite you to join us at our upcoming Lunch and Networking Event, generously co-hosted by Macdonald New Blossoms Hotel, Chester. The event is being held at the traditional venue, situated in the heart of Chester’s city centre. The periodic building natural charm and location makes it a city favourite, and a must visit! The Chamber monthly lunch events are a wonderful opportunity to meet new contacts, enjoy a spot of lunch in a friendly environment. It’s the perfect way to begin networking and grow your contacts within the Chamber and the wider business community. Alongside promoting awareness of your business with like minded people in your local region. Guest Speaker- Dean Paton Our guest speaker for the afternoon will be Dean Paton- Managing Director of Big Heritage. Dean grew up in the Wirral and began his career by running bars and pubs, later deciding to peruse his passion for a career in archaeology. Dean graduated from Chester University and then continued upon this by taking his Masters at Oxford University; during his time completing his Masters, Dean worked in a care home- it was during this time that the idea for Big Heritage was born. Dean initially started Big Heritage as a way to bring archaeology to children in socially deprived areas, explaining the history of their own towns and cities to them, something that they were able to appreciate. Big Heritage now offer more services such as working on heritage projects, community archaeology projects and taking his knowledge and skills to schools to educate and inform in a fun manor. He found that he was able to help people connect better with heritage through explaining it in different ways; after gaining support from the University of Chester, Dean was able to set up the business within an office at the Riverside Innovation Centre in Chester. The menu for our 2 course lunch is still to be advised but with the renowned food reputation of Blossoms it promises to be delicious! We hope to see you at what promises to be a fantastic event! Round the Table Networking at Conwy Business Centre

In collaboration with the Conway Business Centre, The West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce we will be hosting what promises to be yet another fantastic ‘Round the Table’ networking event. The event is to be held at Conwy Business Centre which focuses on business growth and development. The centre is a hub for local start ups but also for existing businesses, helping them to thrive and grow within a modern and stylish environment. Guests will be provided with delicious breakfast favourites, alongside complimentary hot beverages, before being able to join in on the networking fun and promote themselves and their business to a fantastic array of new business contacts. The Round the Table networking events are a fun, lively and friendly way of getting to know fellow business-people in the local community. Each guest has a few minutes to introduce themselves and share their background before moving ‘around the table’ and getting to know each individual around their table. Guests then swap seats and tables and start all over again! Alongside the modern venue, the session also promises to be an enjoyable event whilst giving delegates the opportunity to swap contact details, meet individuals from a range of businesses and organisations and network. We hope to see you there at what promises to be a fantastic event! Don’t forget to bring your business cards!

Round the Table Networking at Thornton Science Park

The West Cheshire and North Wales Chamber of Commerce is joining together in partnership with the team at Thornton Science Park to host a Round the Table Networking Breakfast Event, held on Thursday 9th November. Thornton Science Park is now part of the University of Chester, marking the start of a new science hub for the region. With it’s cutting-edge facilities and sleek conference and seminar suites, it is a fantastic addition to the University’s ever-expanding campus. So get together and join fellow Chamber members, all whilst making great business connections. All guests in attendance will be treated to refreshments on arrival which have been generously provided by our co-hosts at Thornton Science Park. Once guests have been welcomed and enjoyed their breakfast beverages, they will make their way into the suite before the networking fun begins. Round the Table Networking is one of the Chamber’s specialty events, providing guests with the opportunity to meet plenty of people from across the region. Each table goes ’round the table’ and shares their story, before swapping seats and repeating the fun! The event promises to be plenty of fun and gives delegates the opportunity to swap contact details, meet individuals from a range of businesses and organisations and network with fellow Chamber members. Don’t forget to bring your business cards! **Please note: due to the nature of the site, Thornton Science Park is subject to high levels of security and has restricted access so guests MUST book onto the event in advance. Entrance will only be granted to authorized guests and so you must inform the Chamber of your intention to attend. On arrival, you will be signed in by security who will then direct you to the canteen where the event is being held. We look forward to welcoming you there and hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a wonderful event.

Lifted by Beauty: Adventures in Dreaming

Made with the people of Rhyl, Lifted By Beauty: Adventures In Dreaming is a response to the austerity agenda that has brought us to our knees. Together we re-imagine how we might live and in doing so, find ourselves celebrating the simplicity of kindness, of tenderness, of love. This is an odyssey, an antidote to the darkness and the fear. A hymn to the unremarkable, daily acts of heroism made by people, who offer a lifeline to others who may have lost their way. Together we consider the fragility of resilience, the generosity of the human spirit and the power of hope and possibility. Join us for an adventure in dreaming.
