Freedom Leisure is delighted to be able to say a BIG HELLO to all customers of the Wrexham Leisure Centres. We are very pleased to have been selected by Wrexham County Borough Council to manage Waterworld, Chirk Leisure & Activity Centre, Gwyn Evans Leisure & Activity Centre and Queensway from the 1st March 2016.

Who is freedom leisure?
Freedom Leisure is a not for profit leisure trust which means that we don’t have any shareholders to pay. All our surpluses are reinvested into our centres to maintain and improve the service we provide for your local communities. Freedom Leisure is a friendly, dedicated and customer focused company, currently operating 65 centres including locally in Powys, Forest of Dean, Malvern Hills and Worcester. We aim to provide a high level of service, tailored to meet local needs. This means that everything we do is based on the expectations of existing and potential customers.
What happens next?
We are working hard to ensure the transition to Freedom Leisure is as seamless as possible. You will see the same staff working in your local leisure centre, but they will be wearing a new Freedom Leisure uniform.
All centres will be included in the freedom leisure website:
Each centre will have its own pages and these will contain news, timetables and information. Their will be new Facebook and Twitter pages which will be updated regularly with information and news. To stay up to date please ‘like’ and ‘share’ the new Facebook pages.
Facility hirers will need to complete new booking forms. Please email: Michaela at michaelea.rouy@freedom–leisure.co.uk with your details so we can send you a Freedom Leisure booking form and ensure the continuity of your booking.
Membership benefits will not change from March 1st but we hope to include a new membership to provide access to all Freedom Leisure centres, in addition to those in Wrexham.
Two major investment schemes are planned. We will be starting to draw up proposals and consult customers on a significant refurbishment of Waterworld. This will potentially include a new reception and café including Costa Coffee and a larger gym with refurbished toilets and changing areas. Chirk Leisure and Activity Centre will benefit from a new larger gym and the existing gym will be converted into a studio.
In addition, investment will be made into energy saving measures which will help to reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings.
Once the projects have been agreed we will add a page on the website to provide more information on the changes and help ensure all customers are kept up to date. Information will also be available in the centres.
Freedom leisure swimming / swim school
Freedom Leisure works in partnership with both the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and Swim Wales to deliver the relevant Learn to Swim Pathway within our Swim Schools. Current Swim School members in Wrexham will continue to follow the same scheme of work leading to the same goals. We strive to offer a varied programme of aquatic activities to provide opportunities for all ages and abilities.
We will continue to support the Welsh Government’s free swimming initiative for Welsh residents aged 60 and over and children aged 16 and under (Under 8’s must be accompanied by an adult).
Over the next couple of months we will be working with the centres to create individual Aquatic Improvement Plans which reflect the Council’s Aquatic Strategy. These documents assist us in ensuring we have the desired focus on aquatic elements at your centre. We carry out regular reviews of our pool programme to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the local community and we welcome your feedback to inform this process.
Sport & health development
Freedom Leisure has a strong background in Sport and Health development starting the first GP referral programme in the country over 20 years ago. Our Hailsham centre recently won the ‘Rehab Facility of the Year’ award at the National Fitness Awards. We are very much looking forward to delivering the NERS programme in Wrexham and ensuring the scheme continues to be delivered to a high standard within the County.
