The Opening Celebration

The Opening Celebration of the Meeting Place: 31st March 2004

The sun shone from a cloudless sky as the children of Park Infants and Park Junior Schools gathered in the park ready for the opening procession through the trees to the Meeting Place.

Over one hundred parents, relatives and friends were there to applaud their work and to join the Mayor of Wrexham, local Councillors and the Director of Education and Leisure Services to open the Meeting Place.

The infants - 90 children in all! - had worked with percussionist Rick Wilson to create toe-tapping rhythms, using local slate and stones from the park itself as their musical instruments.

Ms Ivison's class from the junior school had worked with dancer Emma-Jane Shepherd and martial artist Pol Wong, using an exciting mixture of Kung Fu moves and contemporary dance styles. They created a dance from an ancient legend of sleeping dragons, one red and one white, the story which explains the design of Wales' national flag.

Ms Roberts' class had worked with Ranger Tamsin Butler, to make the colourful banners which they carried in the procession. They held twenty shining red and white ribbons for the Mayor to cut with his gleaming new scissors, to open The Meeting Place. Then the Mayor wrote a message on the keystone of the dragon arch, adding his name to the many inscribed stones from the people of Llay which artist Roger Bloomfield had set into the circular wall of the Meeting Place, around the dragon mosaic.

The Meeting Place was officially open! We hope it will continue to be a focal point for people who love Alyn Waters Country Park for many years to come.
