Wrexham County Borough Play Development

Wrexham recognises the key role of play in children's development and that play takes place indoors, outdoors, in supervised and unsupervised facilities. Wrexham also understands that children need to have access to a range of play opportunities.

Furthermore, Wrexham recognises that children have a right to play and that this right must be promoted, respected and protected. Wrexham is committed to children's right to play and will implement this commitment through its Play Strategy. A Play Strategy for Wrexham 2002-2007.

Aim

To improve the range and quality of play opportunities for Children and Young People across the Borough

Objectives

  • Develop a co-ordinated approach to play
  • Raise the profile and recognise the importance of play in the healthy development of children and young people
  • Develop a play service that is accessible to all children
  • Develop existing and new play opportunities
  • Develop a service that is properly resourced and supported

Play Grant Funding

The grant will provide an opportunity for children's play and enrichment at little or no cost, with the priority given to disadvantaged areas. Any organisations can apply provided they are from the within Wrexham County Borough. The main purpose of the Play Grant is to support innovative projects that will create or improve current play provision. Fixed equipment will not be given a priority. The maximum grant available will be £5,000 however applications will be judged on merit.

Examples of projects to date

  • Funded open access play schemes in Community First areas
  • Funded an out reach play worker on Solway Banks
  • Developed a Skills Circle drawing together play professionals to implement the Quality Assurance Framework for Open Access Play
  • Sourcing funding to expand the Wrexham Play Association Mobile Scrap Store (Skippies) into rural communities
  • Worked with local communities to access funding streams appropriate to their needs - Glyn Ceiriog Skate half pipe
  • Worked along side play interested professionals to develop a co-ordinated approach to play within the Borough providing space and areas to play
