A few weeks ago, Wrexham Council’s Rights of Way section was contacted by Keith Chetwood, a walker who was planning to walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats. Keith had chosen to come up through Wales on Offa’s Dyke Path and needed a route across country to get to the Pennine Way. The Maelor Way through Wrexham formed part of the solution.
Not many people pass through Wrexham on this end-to-end journey so Dave Smith, Wrexham’s Access & Improvement Officer, met up with him at Overton to walk part of the route and ask him some questions about his journey.
Keith said
"I’ve wanted to do this for 20 years. I retired 10 years ago and I have been walking in the Himalayas, Iceland and Ethiopia. This walk is about 850 miles long.
I’m now a third of the way through and as I started almost exactly a month ago, I probably have another two months to go.
I’ve met many interesting people on the trip but the most interesting were a couple in Devon who have walked the entire coastline of Britain!"
Keith, who lives in Melkridge, Northumberland, is raising money for Multiple Sclerosis and Epilepsy charities, and by just meeting people along the way, has already raised £300.
So far he has lost 20lbs but admits it’s a long way to go for someone to lose weight!
"I’m on my second pair of boots but only because I started off with relatively new shoes which proved too uncomfortable. I got my wife to post via special delivery my older, worn-in and comfortable pair and I picked them up at a post office en route.
When I finish, I’ll take a well-earned rest. I definitely will not be walking back!"
Anyone wishing to support Keith is invited to visit the websites of the charities he is supporting at www.mssociety.org.uk (external website) and www.epilepsynse.org.uk (external website).
