Overton Walks

Wrexham County Borough Council is pleased to announce three new walks on its increasingly popular Walks website www.wrexham.gov.uk/walks.

Some years ago local walks writer Raymond Roberts produced a booklet called “The Overton Six” in his Clwydian Walks series. Then local author Gordon Emery produced a walk from Overton in his book "Family Walks in the North Wales Borderlands". As far as the people of Overton were concerned, this was “Walk 7”.

When Overton resident Ken Farrell had the opportunity to work with Groundwork Wrexham to produce a further three walk guides, it was only logical to call them Overton Routes 8, 9 and 10. These were published a few years ago as folded A4 leaflets.

With further help from Ken, Wrexham Council’s Rights of Way team has now updated them for the website. Although the routes are the same, new colour maps have been prepared and an opportunity added for the public to submit digital photographs taken on the walk. There are already some images in the galleries, mainly taken by Ken.

A council spokesman said “We’ve decided to drop the ‘8, 9 and 10’, fearing that we’d get too many queries along the lines of  “Where are the other seven walks?”! It has been a pleasure working in partnership with Mr Farrell to bring these walks to a wider audience. Fortunately Ken and his colleagues in Overton have helped look after the footpaths so well that there wasn’t much to do on the ground.”

Ken Farrell said “Overton is surrounded by a forty mile network of interconnecting public footpaths and bridleways, all of them readily accessible from the village where there is free car parking for visitors. There is also a regular bus service to the village from Wrexham and Whitchurch. All the paths are clear and fully waymarked and cover a wide variety of attractive landscapes, riverside, woodland and pasture, many with extensive views. Until fairly recently many routes were obstructed or hidden but thanks to great efforts by Wrexham County Borough Council and the former Clwyd County Council all are now fully open for everyone to enjoy throughout the year."

The walks are available to download at www.wrexham.gov.uk/walks.
