Community Councils

If you are a member of a Community Council interested in keeping the Public Rights of Way network in your area open and easy to use, why not contact us to discuss the possible opportunities available? Every year we work in cooperation with one Community Council, local people and Groundwork Wrexham and Flintshire to improve the network of recorded Public Rights of Way in the particular community.

As a result of taking part in the scheme the community will be given priority for as long as resources allow, due to public and council involvement, with issues that occur after the project. In order for the community to be in with a chance of being selected, there must be a good volunteer base from local residents and the community council. This is to ensure that the work undertaken in the project does not fall into disrepair due to lack of use, as the best way to keep a Public Right of Way open and easy to use is to use it! Communities that have already seen the benefit of such a project are Holt, Marchwiel, Brymbo, Coedpoeth, Gwersyllt and Broughton.

A form of ‘Adopt-a-Path’ scheme will be agreed upon were each Public Right of Way in the community can be maintained by a volunteer, clearing light overgrowth and doing minor repairs. More major issues should be reported to the department for one of our Rangers to inspect.

We can provide a large scale map of the whole community, showing the Public Rights of Way and also smaller scale maps of each individual path in the community.

Other communities receive a certain degree of priority on their recorded Public Rights of Way that have not take part in a Community Project.
Overton has had a certain degree of priority for some years as a volunteer in the community undertakes surveys of each path every year in the ‘Adopt-a-Path’ scheme; doing light maintenance work and informing us of any bigger problems. Until recently, Overton’s paths were inspected by Mr K. Farrell, with some help from Wrexham Council and Groundwork Wrexham and Flintshire. Mr Farrell was able to create three new walks in Overton that are now on our list of Self Guided Walks. David Burton now maintains the Overton Public Right of Way and so a certain degree of priority maintenance continues.

Minera has also seen a certain degree of priority from the Council. Having close contact with members of Minera Community Council enabled us to part fund a signpost project to erect new roadside signposts and flags on Minera’s paths.

Community Council’s can also get involved by carrying out group tasks listed on the list of jobs for Volunteers page.
