Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Bicentenary Celebrations

 

Programme of Events on November 26th 2005

Aqueduct

Event

12.00pm  

A 16 gun salute from the field announces the beginning of the celebrations.

The procession of boats begins to cross the aqueduct. Led by Saturn with Thomas Telford at the helm and escorted by a family of "bargees" and men pulling the boat loaded with local industrial produce

12.10pm   The first boats arrive to the sound of stirring music and flag waving by local children, breaking through the bunting at the basin side of the bridge.
12.10 - 12.20pm   The first 3 boats are escorted by uniformed soldiers to their moorings on the Cefn side of the canal
12.00 12.25pm   Along side the moorings of the 3 boats a re enactment will be taking place with "navvies" and "bargees" working and singing traditional songs. When the VIP boat has pulled into position there will be a specific re enactment with Thomas Telford directing proceedings from the footbridge flanked by soldiers who will fire a single volley to welcome each boat.
12.25pm   The VIP's gather by the footbridge and Thomas Telford makes a welcoming speech to them all.
12.30pm (approx)   The soldiers will accompany the VIP’s to the welcoming tent for the speeches and proclamations.
12.30 - 1.00pm   Speeches and proclamations in the main tent
1.00pm   VIP's leave to have lunch.

Main Tent

1.00 - 1.35pm  

Wrexham Brass Band.

1.35 - 2.00pm   Ysgol Deiniol Marchwiel School Choir (in costume).
2.00 - 2.30pm   Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir.
2.30 - 3.30pm   The Re-enactment on the main field.
3.30 - 4.00pm   Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir.
4.00 - 4.35pm   Wrexham Brass Band.
   

FIREWORK DISPLAY TO THE SOUND OF HANDELS WATERMUSIC.

The Main Arena

  • Two military camps of English and French soldiers will hold a demonstration of camp life, cooking and life in the "field".
  • A combined military battle will take place between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
  • Victorian Carousel.

Exhibition Tents

  • Open throughout the day the exhibition tents will have various canal art exhibitions and demonstrations, talks, storytelling and traditional  arts and crafts for sale. Yale college present local digital stories.

Children's Entertainment

  • Face painting, children’s crafts and Punch and Judy

Refreshments

  • Hog Roast and Soup tent. Jacket potatoes, hot drinks and donuts to keep you warm!

Canalside

12.00 - 4.40pm  

Throughout the afternoon at various times there will be a re enactment of songs and life on the canals by Cefn Mawr Musical Society.

Especially for younger children, meet Rosie and Jim on the canal boat. Listen to videos and find out what it’s like to live on a beautiful narrow boat.

Traditional wandering musicians and folk artists.

1.00 - 4.00pm   Canal boat trips across the Aqueduct.
1.00 - 4.00pm   The Telford Pub will provide traditional food.

Fireworks

Event

4.35 - 4.55pm  

A fitting climax to the days celebrations! A Grande Finale Firework display set to the passionate and stirring sounds of Handels Water Music.

5.00 - 6.00pm   Crowd dispersal safely.
