Disability Access to Sport and Health (DASH)
Background
It is well documented that people with disabilities tend to participate
in sport and physical activity sessions at lower percentage levels in
comparison to those without disabilities.
Several factors can be seen to negatively influence the sports and physical
activity participation levels of people with disabilities-; physical access,
transport, coach education and finance represent the most common barriers.
The DASH card scheme aims to address and alleviate some of the financial
barriers experienced and to positively encourage and promote opportunities
for with with disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity
within the Wrexham Borough.
The Principal
On conception of the DASH Card Scheme, the following three factors were
identified as key aims for the scheme:
- To remove barriers and increase participation in sport and physical
activity.
- To improve communication in order to identify needs and improve service
delivery.
- To improve health and fitness levels amongst people with disabilities.
