But – how much is all this going to cost me?

I am not sure about coaching BUT I would like to get involved as a volunteer.

That’s fine – disability sport needs as many volunteers as possible! Whether you would like to help out in a club, become a sports administrator, drive a vehicle or ‘buddy’ up with a disabled sportsperson who needs some support, there is a role for you. Without volunteers, sport simply would not happen! Your Disability Sport Cymru Development Officer can help you get started and provide ongoing training and support.

What kind of clubs is Disability Sport Cymru going to create and develop?

Disability Sport Cymru takes a flexible approach when developing clubs in the community. Some clubs are pan-disability, which means that they cater for all types of disability, while other clubs may be disability specific or perhaps are already in existence such as the local gymnastics or swimming clubs. In these cases, disabled people will take part alongside non-disabled people. Whatever the type of club the message is the same – Disability Sport Cymru aims to develop quality opportunities so that people take part in sport on a regular basis.

How easy is it to start a club?

Developing a club does not happen overnight. It takes time to make sure that the facility is right, there are enough people to ‘make it happen’ and that there are enough people who want to play the spot/s. A good club, however, can make a real difference and the rewards are high! Disability Sport Cymru Development Officers are trained in club development and will be delighted to assist and help you get off to good start. There are also grants that can be accesses to ensure that you have the right equipment and help to pay for those necessary ‘start-up’ costs.

My club has thought of approaching disabled people to become members but we are not quite sure where to start.

Disability Sport Cymru can help. Contact your local Disability Sport Cymru Development Officer, who will make a visit to your club. They can help you to assess your club’s current provision and identify certain things that you may need to address for your disabled members. The Disability Sport Cymru Development Officer can help you make contact with disabled people and can advise on sports grants to help your club meet any additional needs.

What about creating competitive opportunities for disabled members in my club?

Appropriate competition is as important in disability sport as it is in any other sport. Disability Sport Cymru will assist in developing local competition that can feed into regional, national, British and international competitive structures. The standard of disabled competition at any level is extremely high. Competitors need to be able to build up their competition experience with support and guidance. Your club could make the difference.
