Wrexham’s sporting community was in a euphoric mood on 20th November 2009 when over 300 players, coaches, volunteers and dignitaries gathered at the Wrexham County Borough Sports awards.
The evening was held at Brymbo Sports and Social complex and hosted by Wrexham Borough Council’s Leisure Officer, Ken Danskin, and showcased the wealth of sporting talent within the county. The ‘oscar-esq’ awards now in its sixth year recognised and rewarded those who make an outstanding contribution to sport in the area.
The categories and their winners are as follows:
Sheila Griffiths presented the prestigious Arnold Griffiths Service to Sport Award to John Bell of Gresford Cricket Club who said “I am delighted to win this award it means a lot for both me and the club”.
During the evening the audience were entertained by Darland High School’s Dance Team. Emily Morgan the team dance leader won this year’s Sportsmanship Award and said “I am so pleased to have won this award, we have all been working so hard. It is great to be invited to perform here tonight and show people what we do”.
Alan Watkin Chief Leisure, Libraries and Culture Officer said “It was a fantastic evening. All of the winners have contributed one way or another to sport in Wrexham. They should be very proud of their achievements. Everyone involved and nominated at the awards evening has helped to making Wrexham one of the most active and successful sporting counties in Wales. Each year the competition gets tougher and tougher, and it gives our county the opportunity to celebrate the success of the fantastic sporting men and women we have here in Wrexham.”
The Sports Awards highlighted the outstanding work and athletic achievement of local people, and enabled everyone to share in congratulating athletes, coaches and volunteers who have accomplished sporting excellence in Wrexham.
The event has received enthusiastic support from the local sporting community of Wrexham as well as great assistance from a range of sponsors. We look forward to building on the success of the event in the future, and to celebrating county winners who go on to gain future recognition at a regional and national level.
