The RLSS NPLQ qualifies people to be lifeguards. All Swimming Pools in Wrexham employ RLSS NPLQ Qualified lifeguards to safeguard the public. The qualification is renewed every 2 years and during the 2 years lifeguards must have written evidence of attending at least 20 hours training. All pools in the Borough however require staff to train at least once a month. Several sites in the Borough offer NPLQ training courses, for more information on the RLSS NPLQ qualification please see the Lifesavers website for details, this website also contains details of where to find your closest course.
ASA Swimming Teacher Qualifications. All swimming pools in Wrexham employ ASA qualified staff to teach swimming. ASA Level 1 qualifies a teacher to assist a level 2 teacher in the delivery of a lesson. On completion of a Level 1 course and following at least 15 hours teaching (this should be across a range of levels) a Teacher may progress to the Level 2 Teachers Course. A Level 2 Teacher is qualified to teach a class of up to 25 students (numbers dependant on ability of the group and teacher) from non-swimmer through to coaching level (depending on the qualification held by the teacher). Gwyn Evans Sports Centre offers both Level 1 and 2 Qualifications. For more information contact Gwyn Evans Sports Centre or see the ASA website for details on the course or to find your nearest course.
The Swimming Development Officer is attempting to create a range of opportunities for those swimmers who would be interested in participating in alternated activities such as water polo, synchronised swimming, aqua aerobics, aquanatal, kayaking/canoeing, snorkelling, sub aqua, lifesaving and diving.
Wrexham have been lucky enough to have Swimfit provided by Kelloggs. Swimfit is a gym programme for the swimming pool, which aims to make swimming more enjoyable. Lane swimmers will benefit from this by being able to download swimming programmes to follow once in the pool, to make the experience more varied and therefore interesting and keeping them motivated.
