There was tough competition for what some would say is Wales' most important position.
Neville
Southall 1982-98 Caps 92 N No one has played more times for Wales than Neville. From Llandudno he progressed to be one of the great "shot-stoppers" in the game. A vital player throughout the 1980s and 1990s, his fellow footballers recognised his skill making him PFA Player of the Year in 1985. In the 1988 International against Holland Neville virtually took on the Dutch forwards alone saving goal after goal. Meanwhile at club level he was the basis for Everton's success in the 1980s.
Dai
Davies 1975-83 Caps 75 W Known affectionately as 'Dai the Drop', Dai made the Welsh goalkeepers's gloves his own in the 1970s. Dai faced tough competition for this place on the Subs Bench from Jack Kelsey. Dai, though was never just a footballer. His autobiography "Only Half the Man My Father Was" and his commentaries on S4C reflect a man whose football career had its ups and downs.
Every
team needs a referee on their side. Mervyn Griffiths is our choice for
Wales' man with the whistle.
Mervyn is the only Welshman so far to appear in the Final of the World Cup. He donned the black for the 1954 Final. Surely a recognition of his skill and integrity in a tough job.
