National Built in Quality Awards

All of Wrexham's nominations were put forward to the National Built In Quality Awards, which took place in London's Tower Thistle Hotel in June. One of Wrexham's nominations that being 'Zouk Café Bar' on Town Hill came in the top three for the category of Small Commercial and won a Highly Commended award at the event which was presented on the evening by the TV celebrity, Linda Barker, of Changing Rooms.

Wrexham's Award Winners

Winner: Johnathon Baldwin of Zouk Café Bars Ltd

The project involved a substantial refurbishment of a listed building into a modern day café bar/ restaurant in the town centre.

  • The character of the building has been retained and sympathetically enhanced by displaying the existing timber framed structure with infill panels of plaster.
  • All measures for means of escape and disabled access have been upgraded to meet current requirements.
  • New toilet facilities have been installed and the kitchen areas have been extended and refurbished together with a new lighting and heating system in place throughout the building to create a warm pleasant atmosphere day or night.

The Site Team and designer were extremely keen on effective site management, which enabled such a high standard of workmanship to be achieved. The team was very conscientious with regards to the health and safety of the project, which enabled a safe environment to be sustained.

The developer and the team were extremely keen to achieve a partnership approach with building control, which resulted in compliance with the requirements and enabled the site management to co-ordinate program of works so that the site was always ready for inspections.

The company was using our services for the first time and were extremely happy with the service provided, as were we with the high standard workmanship achieved by the company. We look forward to working together on any future developments.


Winner: Lord and Lady Hughes of Abrahurst Ltd

Address: Caelica Farm, Tallarn Green, Wrexham

Category: Small residential

The project involved a conversion of farm buildings to create two residential units and two new garages in keeping with surrounding buildings.

The proposed plans included:

  • the sympathetic enhancement and restructure of the existing structure, and
  • the building of two new garages in keeping with the appearance of the buildings and the surrounding countryside.

Extremely conscientious site management enabled the project to achieve high standard of workmanship throughout. The developer was extremely keen on an effective health and safety approach that was consistent throughout the project which has helped achieve recognition in terms of storage of materials, tidiness of site and the high standard of quality workmanship.

The builder was always keen to find solutions to any problems encountered and the site was always ready for inspection. The builder always gave more than the required notice for inspection visits and if necessary was willing to visit office to solve any problems. Disabled requirements were met even though the project involved conversion work as opposed to new build.

The builder has used the Local Authority service previously and more than impressed with service provided. The builder was more specialised in new build than conversion work but the final results of this particular development highlight that conversion work could become speciality. We look forward to working together on any future developments.


Winner: Martin Moore of Moore Construction

Category: Small residential

The project consisted of a new build triple garage and games room/storeroom above in a semi rural location. The finished project was extremely sympathetic to the existing cottage dwelling and surrounding properties incorporating many of the original cottage details and features.

The builder, being extremely conscientious with regards to site management, enabled the project to achieve high standard of workmanship throughout.

Exceptionally keen health and safety management consistent throughout the project has helped achieve such a high quality standard of workmanship together with a safe environment for employees and visitors. Effective management for storage of materials and tidiness of site was impeccable. The builder was extremely keen to achieve over and above the recommended requirements of the Building Regulations including the foresight of the future use of storeroom.

The builder was extremely conscientious with regards to giving the required notice for site visits, which ensured that the builder was always ready for inspections when carried out. The builder is a small builder and has only been in business for approximately three years. This project is the first new build undertaken, as all other work has been small extensions. Builder was keen on providing a good working relationship with Building Control and in doing so we look forward to working together on any future developments.


Winner: Brian Spencer of Country Barns & Homes

Address: Honkley Barns, Rossett

Category: Volume builder

The project was a conversion of three farm buildings to create seven residential units and garage complex in keeping with surrounding buildings.

The proposals provided the enhancement and restructuring of the existing building together with construction of a new garage complex sympathetic in appearance to buildings in the surrounding countryside. Developers further enhanced the project by use of hard and soft landscaping, water features, paved and gravelled areas.

Site management of the project was extremely effective in enabling the project to achieve a high standard of workmanship throughout. The builder was extremely keen to work in partnership with building control to find solutions to any problems encountered. Conscientious site management enabled this project to be co-ordinated such that the site was always ready for inspection. The effective health and safety approach by site personnel ensured that the project achieved recognition for the excellent storage of materials and tidiness of site, which enabled visitors and site operatives a safe working environment.

The builder who has worked with this Local Authority for the first time is well known for high standard specifications and excellent finishes. The builder has been very impressed with the LABC services and we look forward to working together on any future developments.
