Church of St John, Rhosymedre Located in a large churchyard toward the edge of the built up area at Rhosymedre. The Church was built in 1836-7, largely at the expense of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn of Wynnstay and designed by Edward Welch. J C Edwards, the proprietor of Penybont Works in Cefn Mawr and a pioneer in the production of terracotta contributed to the restoration in 1889 and is commemorated in a remarkable tile work reredos in the church.
The Church is designed in the thin Gothic idiom, more usually associated with Parliamentary Commission funded churches. It is of roughly coursed and squared rubble Cefn sandstone with a shallow pitched slate roof. The western bellcote is corbelled out with saddle back roof and louvered openings.
It is well preserved gothic church, which is of special interest for the excellent tiled reredos, a richly detailed work which is a rare example of its kind, using the products of a celebrated local industry.
