A church was recorded in 1233, and remodelled by TF Pritchard in 1769-70. It was substantially rebuilt in 1870-2 by Benjamin Ferrey.
Built of sandstone rubble and ashlar, it is a four stage 14th Century tower with diagonal buttresses and an arched west door. It has a gabled aisle, clerestoried nave and a 19th Century south porch. The lychgate at the south east corner of church yard is bordered to the south by a rubble wall. The interior displays a 15th Century wall painting on the south wall entitled 'The Works of Mercy' and was restored in 1870. It is associated with the poet Maredudd ap Rhys, who was the vicar from 1430 and who wrote a poem on the works of Mercy.

Listed Grade I as a church with some medieval elements with furnishings of interest and for the important group of monuments. It has group value with listed buildings on High Street and Church Street. Ruabon church is located within the Conservation Area.
