Wrexham Tourism Forum - Interactive Forum

One of the aims of the Wrexham Tourism Forum was to establish a network between members to interchange ideas and share information of mutual benefit through regular meetings.

This has proved successful and, at the request of members, we have now introduced this Interactive Forum for members to post information and queries which can be shared by all participating tourism organisations.

Comment / Question: I recently visited Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny in Ireland where I saw an excellent exhibition 'Footprints in Coal' www.kilkennytourism.ie/eng/Things_To_Do/Heritage_Attractions/ It made me wonder why, given the importance of coal mining to Wrexham's industrial past, we don't have a high quality, permanent exhibition in our area? It would be an excellent educational resource as well as tourism attraction, and of course an acknowledgement of the hardships endured in the past by the miners and their families.

Answer: Many thanks for your email reagrding the potential development of an attraction to mark our Industrial Past.

Whilst our existing attractions do not particularly focus on coal production primarily, I believe the likes of Minera Lead Mines, Bersham Ironworks and Bersham Heritage Centre do focus their Attractions upon our Industrial Heritage, and hold regualr events geared towards celebrating our past. The Clywedog Trail in particular was developed to follow the natural industrial landscape left by the local industy of the 18th and early 19th centuries, which during it's prime powered 17 mills along it's entire length from Minera Lead Mines to Kings Mill.

The campaign to secure UNESCO World Heritage Status for the Pontcysyllte Aqueuct is another step towards acknowledging and celebrating our industrial past, and which if successful with drive much of the marketing of this region in the future, and put Wrexham on the map.

Wrexham Museum regularly hosts exhibits celebrating our past, and are always open to ideas and suggestions from the public.

I hope the above has been of use to you and reassured you that the Tourism offer in Wrexham does embrace our industrial past.
