Information for Tourism Businesses

There’s a wealth of tourism businesses that help make Wrexham such a great place to live and visit.

Wrexham Tourism Forum

The forum is open to all tourism-related organisations and businesses in Wrexham County Borough. It’s free to join, meets twice a year and is a great opportunity for networking and for building working relationships with the Wrexham Council and its economic development team.

STEAM Survey

STEAM is a major research survey which monitors the volume and value of tourism. If, as a tourism business, you participate by submitting monthly visitor numbers, or monthly occupancy figures, you will receive statistics twice a year which show how your business is performing against Wrexham’s average and the North Wales average.

Participating in STEAM helps Wrexham build a picture of how we are performing as a county compared to our North Wales neighbours. It helps us identify trends and patterns within the industry and helps us promote the importance of the tourism sector to local, regional and national government.

Making Pontcysyllte Work For Local Businesses

Plans to help Wrexham businesses tap into opportunities created by the World Heritage Site are a step closer to becoming reality.

Wrexham Tourism Forum, with help from officers at Wrexham Council, has applied for Rural Development Plan (RDP) funding to help deliver a strategic 'umbrella project' designed to both boost local tourism businesses in rural Wrexham and enhance visitors' experience of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal.

The project has made it through the 'expression of interest stage' and the forum has now been invited by the Welsh Assembly Government to make a full application for RDP funding totalling more than £500,000.

If successful, the scheme would get underway in spring 2011. The project would be split into four different strands:

  • A mentoring and grant scheme designed to help businesses improve their performance and raise the standards of Wrexham's overall tourism offer.
  • A digital marketing scheme to give businesses the confidence to make greater use of the internet and other electronic media to market themselves and the World Heritage Site.
  • On site touch screen information kiosks that will encourage visitors to explore beyond the World Heritage Site, spreading the wealth created by Pontcysyllte across the borough.
  • A business cluster scheme designed to help different tourism businesses come together and develop visitor packages around the World Heritage Site.

Further updates on how the funding application is progressing will be provided via future Wrexham Tourism Forum meetings and e-newsletters.
