The Road Safety team work in partnership with the Fire and Rescue Service to promote road safety. Therefore, when the idea for an Impact Roadshow was proposed by White Watch at Wrexham’s Fire Station, the Road Safety Section gave financial support to aid its implementation. This was made possible, by allocating to them, some of the Council’s Local Road Safety Grant, received from the Welsh Assembly Government.
Life-like dummies are placed inside a car which has been involved in a road traffic accident and towed round on a trailer to a variety of schools, colleges and other sites, to make drivers aware of the consequences of road crashes. Fire crew engage with pupils, young drivers and the general public to convey key safety messages, such as the benefits of wearing seat belts and not using mobile phones. Staff from the Road Safety team will also contribute to some of these sessions.
The idea has now been replicated throughout Wales and is referred to as C.S.I. Cymru (short for Crash Scene Incident). It’s instigator, Andy Williams, received a Community Safety award from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, for his part in creating the scheme and making it a success.
