We aim to provide Cycle Training to Year 6 pupils across the County Borough. Up until October 2009, the training was delivered by one of two methods:
From March 2010 onwards, the traditional training scheme will be discontinued. Level 1National Standard training will be offered in its place to those schools, which previously received the traditional scheme. Levels 1 and 2 shall continue to be offered to those schools with suitable on-road training sites.
Training is usually delivered during the summer term or the first half of the Autumn term (finishing at October half term). Courses usually last between 7 to 8 hours and the timetable is agreed between the school and Road Safety Section.
In order for your child to participate in this training, when offered he/she must have a roadworthy bicycle of the correct size and a correctly fitted cycle helmet. Also, they must be already able to ride a bicycle: as this course concentrates on teaching them how to become a safe road user rather than focusing purely on riding ability.
National standard cycle training is, as its name implies, a nationally recognised training programme with a defined syllabus and outcomes. You may find it referred to in the press as Bikeability, as this is the UK brand name for the scheme. Local authorities can choose to apply for registration, if they have nationally accredited instructors. As Wrexham County Borough Council now has National Standard Accredited instructors, we will explore the benefits of registration in the future.
