Young children are taught how to use the School Crossing Patrol correctly or encouraged to practise other safe behaviours, when on and near the road. This is achieved through the delivery of role play sessions in nurseries and Early Years at school. Miniature versions of road furniture are employed, such as a zebra mat and Belisha beacons. The children enjoy being able to use child-sized patrol signs and uniforms.
Key safety messages can be promoted, such as holding hands and using car safety seats. Such messages are reinforced, when possible, by giving promotional items, colouring sheets or booklets for the pupils either to use in school or to take home. Their parents can receive useful reminders and advice from such materials.
